PMP® Exam & Certification FAQs

What is PMP® Exam structure and format?

The PMP certification exam is a computer-based test designed to assess your knowledge across three key domains. The exam consists of 180 questions, which must be completed within 230 minutes. The questions are a mix of different formats, rather than traditional multiple-choice.

  • Total Questions: 180 questions
  • Total Time: 240 minutes (4 hours)
  • Breaks: Two 10-minute breaks (In addition to 240 min exam time)
  • Question Formats: Questions include multiple-choice, multiple-response, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank

Domain Breakdown: The PMP certification exam is scored based on the three official domains: People (33%), Process (41%), and Business Environment (26%)

Approximately 40% of the Questions will represent predictive project management approaches, whereas the remaining 60% will be divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid management approaches.

There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

What is the PMP® exam pass rate?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) does not publicly release the official pass rate for the PMP certification exam. The exam is challenging, and success depends heavily on the candidate’s experience and preparation.

  • Success is less about a public pass rate and more about a structured study plan
  • High-quality simulation exams and a deep understanding of the three exam domains are critical for passing

If a candidate achieves an average score of 75% or higher across at least five full-length mock exams, they are highly likely to score Above Target in all three PMP exam domains.

What is the PMP® Exam Content Outline (ECO)?

The PMP Exam Content Outline (ECO) is the official syllabus for the PMP exam and includes important details such as the number of questions, exam duration, domains, and the topics covered in the exam. It is published by PMI.

PMI typically releases an updated version of the ECO approximately once every three years. The previous version was published in January 2021, and the new version will become effective from July 2026.

The ECO defines the project management topics, tasks, and competencies on which candidates are evaluated during the PMP exam.

You can download the latest ECO from the PMI website here:

  • Market Demand: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects “faster than average” growth for project management specialists, with 78,200 annual openings (Source)
  • Skill Validation: The PMP certification validates modern project management skills in agile and hybrid methods, AI literacy, and business acumen, which are and will be critical in 2026 and beyond

Candidates may use any relevant reference materials, including PMBOK 8 or its previous editions, to prepare for the exam. However, using the latest version is highly recommended. PMBOK 8 is a well-structured resource that covers modern topics such as sustainability, AI use cases in project management, and advanced Agile concepts.
